MAJOR ACTIVITIES

Flying Super Dimona

The graceful Super Dimona which is a multi-utility aircraft of Austrian origin is used to initiate the VIth term Air Force cadets to powered flight. Before taking to the skies, the budding aviators are thoroughly familiarized with their machines. This gives them an insight into the working of the aircraft systems and all procedures and techniques to be followed to get airborne into the blue skies. Attention is given to all aspects of flying training to enable the cadets to be in line with the Air Force ethos prevalent in the flying training establishments/units in the IAF. The trainees fly 10 sorties as a part of their syllabus. The exposure to flying on Super Dimona HK 36 TC aircraft has made sure that most of our cadets are able to earn their coveted ‘Wings’ (brevets) at Air Force Academy.
The primary aim of the cadets of the three services training together was to build a very strong and deep bonding very young in their service career and also to share with each other their own takes on the individual aspects of their own services as perceived by them. Therefore, the glimpse accorded by AFTT to the Vth and VIth term Air Force cadets serves to appraise their peers of the strengths and limitations of Air Power, its peculiarities, and limitations.
In consonance with the ‘joint manship’ ethos of NDA, AFTT also organizes visits of Air Force, Army, and Naval cadets to various IAF establishments. While these visits provide an insight to the Air Force cadets about their future service, it exposes their counterparts from the other two services to the capabilities of IAF and helps build a lasting impression of mutual understanding and respect and a very healthy competition and shared team spirit and trust deemed a basic necessity for all integrated warfare of the future.

KNOW MORE

Over the past seventy years, the Indian Air Force has grown from strength to strength and the requirements of training and awareness and exposure levels have also risen proportionately at all stages. Commensurate with this rapid modernization of Aerial Warfare, there has been a need to prepare the Air Force cadets for an increasingly technical environment.

In line with this requirement, the cadets inducted into NDA have upgraded educational requirements from being holding Senior Secondary School Certificate to further requiring to have studied Science and Maths in them. Presently, the Air Force Cadets are being accorded ground training to award them a B.Tech. degree on completion of their three years at NDA and one year of on the job training in Flying at AFA.

At NDA, the cadets begin their association with AFTT in the V Term when they start learning aviation-related subjects before their flying training in the VI Term. This comprises all aspects of Aviation spanning from Aerodynamics, Avionics, Airframes, Aeronautical Instruments, Airmanship, Meteorology, Aero engines, Navigation and Aviation Medicine.

The grades in these subjects contribute towards graduation credits for their B.Tech. degree.

The training team aims at inculcating aviation sense in the budding air warriors and in grooming them in all aspects of military aviation. Training in AFTT has the following components:

  • Flying Training
  • Ground Training
  • Air warrior Training

Way ahead

Indian Air Force has recently started the induction for two very important branches of the service namely the Maintenance and the Administration with an aim of benefitting from the intensive deep and integrated training being accorded at NDA to all the three Services. Towards this., the induction of 18 cadets for Aeronautical Engineering Officers and 10 cadets for Administration and Logistics has been implemented from 144 NDA courses.

The Air Force Training Team is equipped with adequate modern infrastructure to cater for these developments. A new hangar has been constructed to accommodate the five new Super Dimona Aircraft inducted in Dec 13. The runway has been widened to 100’ and extended to 5000’. It now has its own International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) designation, capable of hosting Fixed Wing Aircraft of Medium Lift category. The Air Traffic Control facility is a modern complex which houses radiotelephony and aero-sports clubrooms. It also houses an Automatic Weather Station for collection of weather data.

Equipped with this preparatory training and professional exposure, the Ex–NDA Air Force cadet is well on his way to take to the skies and face the technical and administrative challenges of future. The National Defence Academy is confident that each cadet trained and passed out of this institution will stand tall to be counted amongst the best Military Aviators and Air Warriors in the World.
