NDA Eligibility Criteria 2023: UPSC specifies the NDA eligibility criteria in the official NDA notification. It takes into account aspects such as nationality, age restriction, educational qualifications, and physical and medical conditions. The age criteria for the NDA exam are between 16.5 to 19.5 years. Candidates who have passed or are about to take the class 12th exam are eligible to apply for the NDA. Union Public Service Commission is giving a golden opportunity to the applicants by releasing the vacancies for the National Defence Academy and the Indian Naval Academy.

NDA Eligibility 2023

Applicants have to fit into the eligibility criteria to get into the National Defence Academy and the Indian Naval Academy. The eligibility criteria for NDA are further subdivided into nationality, NDA age limit, marital status, etc. Also, only male candidates can apply for this recruitment.

NDA Eligibility – Age Limit 

UPSC follows particular age criteria every year and it remains unchanged irrespective of the year of the exam. The NDA has specified the age eligibility requirements in its official notification. The maximum and minimum required age and other information have been mentioned below. Candidates are asked to refer to the information below. Here are the eligibility criteria for NDA-I 2023 applicants:

  • Not earlier than 02nd July 2004
  • Not later than 1st July 2007

NDA Eligibility – Educational Qualification 

The second Eligibility criterion for NDA to be eligible to sit for the NDA-I exam 2023 is educational qualification. We have segregated the required educational qualifications according to the departments below. Use it for reference.

Qualification For Army Wing of National Defence Academy:

Applicant must have studied up to 12th Class and pass the 10+2 pattern of School Education or equivalent examination conducted by a State Education Board or a University

Qualification For Air Force and Naval Wings of National Defence Academy and the 10+2 Cadet Entry Scheme at the Indian Naval Academy:

Applicant must have studied up to 12th Class pass of the 10+2 pattern of School Education with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics conducted by a State Education Board or a University.

NDA Eligibility – Nationality

The applicant must be belonging to one of the categories mentioned below. The applicants who belong to any of the following should have official proof of their nationality in the form of a valid document issued by the government of India. If you do not do so, even after selection, the candidate will be debarred as he doesn’t fit into the Eligibility Criteria for NDA.

NDA Eligibility – Marital Status

For the UPSC NDA recruitment, the applicant must be an unmarried candidate only. Candidates who marry during the training will be discharged and have to refund all expenditures spend on them by the government.

NDA Eligibility – Physical Standards

Applicants planning to apply for the NDA-I 2023 recruitment should be physically fit. Aspirants who want to join the Navy must meet the following requirements:

  • Sitting Height: The minimum of 81.50 cm and the maximum is 96 cm
  • Leg Length: The minimum of 99 cm and a maximum of 120 cm
  • Thigh Length: Maximum of 64 cms

Only candidates with verifiable evidence of national-level bodybuilding, wrestling, or boxing will have weights over the permissible maximum. In such cases, the standards listed below must be met by the NDA applicant.

  • The BMI should be under 25.
  • Females should have a waist-to-hip ratio of less than 0.8.
  • Females should have one less than 80 cm.
  • All biochemical metabolic measures should be within normal limits.

Aspirants who want to join the Navy must meet the following requirements:

NDA Eligibility – Case of Body Tattoos

Candidates need to go by the guidelines mentioned by the NDA exam governing body in order to understand whether body tattoos are allowed and if allowed, under what circumstances. In the notification, details regarding tattoos are explained.

  • Candidates must ensure that any permanent body tattoos are only visible on the inside of their forearms.
  • UPSC does not accept tattoos on the inside of the elbow to the wrist, or on the opposite side of the palm/back (dorsal) side of the hand in any circumstances.
  • Tattoos on any other part of the body that are permanent are also not permitted.
  • In case an applicant belongs to a tribe where it is customary to have a tattoo, approval will be granted considering the customs involved.

Note: Permanent body tattoos are only permitted on the inner face of the forearm i.e. from inside of the elbow to the wrist and on the reverse side of the palm/back (dorsal) side of the hand/Permanent body tattoos on any other part of the body are not acceptable and candidates will be barred from further selection. Tribes with tattoo marks on the face or body as per their existing custom and traditions will be permitted on a case-to-case basis. Comdt Selection Centre will be competent auth for clearing such cases.

NDA Eligibility – Conditions That Will Entail Female Candidates Being Declared Unfit

  • Amenorrhoea, either primary or secondary
  • Severe menorrhagia and/or dysmenorrhea
  • Urinary incontinence due to stress
  • Cervical elongation or prolapse occurs outside the introitus even after corrective surgery.
  • Pregnancy. Pregnancy will be a reason for NDA denial.
  • Any size complex ovarian cyst.
  • A simple ovarian cyst measuring more than six centimetres in diameter.
  • Adenomyosis and Endometriosis
  • Any size submucous fibroid.
  • Any size broad ligament or cervical fibroid putting pressure on the ureter.
  • A single fibroid uterus that is more than three centimetres in diameter; fibroids that are more than two in number (each fibroid not more than fifteen millimetres in diameter); or fibroids that cause endometrial cavity deformation.
  • Except for the arcuate uterus, and congenital uterine abnormalities.
  • Infection of the pelvis, either acute or chronic.
  • Sexual differentiation disorders
  • The Gynaecologist will assess any additional condition on its own merits.

NDA Eligibility – Dental Conditions

In the UPSC NDA guidelines, candidates must have proper medical and physical conditions. Take note of the below-mentioned dental conditions that should not be present in any candidate. If yes, it can lead to disqualification of the candidature. Therefore, read the points carefully.

  • Progressive or recurring pathological diseases of the jaws.
  • Significant jaw disparities between the upper and lower jaws that may interfere with efficient mastication and/or speech will result in rejection.
  • Symptomatic Temporomandibular Disorder Clicking and soreness in the joints A mouth opening of less than 30 mm was recorded at the incisal borders, resulting in TMJ dislocation on a wide opening.
  • All of them are malignant conditions.
  • Clinical diagnosis of submucous fibrosis with or without mouth opening restriction.
  • Poor dental health as evidenced by gross visible calculus, periodontal pockets, and/or gum bleeding.
  • Loose teeth: More than two movable teeth will disqualify the candidate.
  • Candidates who have had cosmetic or post-traumatic maxillofacial surgery/trauma will be judged UNFIT for at least 24 weeks after the surgery/injury date.

NDA Eligibility – Spinal Diseases

The NDA exam authority only allows candidates having spinal diseases who can provide evidence for any of the spinal diseases mentioned below. If you have a spinal disease that is not mentioned in the list below, it may lead to a special diagnosis but it depends upon the discretion of the NDA exam authority.

  • Spondylolisthesis/spondylolysis
  • Compression fracture of vertebrae
  • SC Heuer man’s disease (Adolescent kyphosis)
  • Degenerative Disc. disease
  • Presence of Schmorl’s nodes at more than one level
  • Atlantooccipital and atlantoaxial anomalies
  • Loss of cervical lordosis when associated with clinically restricted movements of the cervical spine
  • Unilateral / Bilateral cervical ribs with demon stable neurological or circulatory deficit
  • Arthritis/spondylosis (Rheumatoid arthritis and allied disorders / Ankylosing spondylitis/ Osteoarthritis, spondylosis and degenerative joint disease / Non-articular rheumatism (e.g. lesions of the rotator cuff, tennis elbow, recurrent lumbago etc.) & Miscellaneous disorders including SLE, polymyositis, vasculitis.
  • Hemi vertebrae and/or incomplete block (fused) vertebrae at any level in the cervical, dorsal or lumbar spine and complete block (fused) vertebrae at more than one level in the cervical or dorsal spine
  • Scoliosis is more than 15 degrees as measured by Cobb’s method.
  • Unilateral Sacralisation or lubrication (Complete or incomplete) at all levels and bilateral incomplete sacralisation or lubrication
  • Mention of any other disease by the specialist
  • The granulomatous disease of the spine

NDA Eligibility – X-Ray Exam

The UPSC will release the guidelines for physical criteria on the official website. Here, we have mentioned the NDA physical criteria for the X-ray exam that will help you to refrain from committing any mistake that can lead to rejection of the candidature. Candidates must be free of any of the minor ailments mentioned below.

  • Atlanto-occipital and atlantoaxial anomalies
  • Cervical ribs with demonstrable neurological or Circulatory deficit
  • Arthritis/spondylosis
  • Scoliosis is more than 15 degrees as measured by Cobb’s Method (10 degrees for Army and Navy).
  • Presence of Schmorl’s node at more than one level
  • Incomplete Sacralisation Unilateral or Bilateral
  • Spina Bifida other than SV 1 and LV 5 if completely Sacralised
  • Any other abnormality, if so considered by specialist
  • Spondylolisthesis / Spondylosis / Spondylolysis
  • Herniated nucleus pulposus
  • Compression fracture of Vertebra
  • The granulomatous disease of the spine.
  • More than mild Kyphosis/Lordosis
  • Sacralisation Disease

NDA Eligibility – Other Medical Conditions not to be present in the candidates

There are a few medical conditions under which candidates are not allowed to sit for the NDA exam 2023. Take reference from the points stated below.

  • There should be no signs of a fragile constitution or physical defects.
  • A well-developed chest is required of candidates.
  • The bones and joints should be in good working order.
  • There is no history of medical problems or fits.
  • Candidates must be able to hear normally.
  • There is no speech impediment.
  • Blood pressure is normal, and there are no symptoms of heart disease or blood vessel disease.
  • There is no enlargement of the liver or spleen.
  • There are no skin infections and no defects in the urine.
  • The USG abdomen test found no anomalies.
  • Routine ECG for Air Force applicants must fall within standard limits if they have a sufficient number of natural and sound teeth.

NDA Eligibility – Miscellaneous (Other Eligibility Criteria and Conditions 2023)

Apart from the NDA Eligibility criteria requirements mentioned above, candidates must meet a few additional physical requirements. They are as follows-

  • No signs of a weakened constitution or physical problems.
  • A well-developed chest; a fully inflated chest should be at least 81cm in length.
  • After full inspiration, the minimum range of expansion should be 5 cm.
  • There should not be any maldevelopment or impairment of bone or joint function.
  • No history of mental breakdowns or fits. Normal hearing abilities- In a calm room, the candidate should be able to hear a forced whisper with each ear at a distance of 610 cm.
  • No speaking impairment. Normal blood pressure with no symptoms of functional or organic heart and blood vessel illness.
  • There should not be any liver or spleen enlargement.
  • No abnormalities in urine examination.
  • There should not be any evidence of any skin illness that could cause impairment or disfigurement.
  • No abnormalities found during the USG abdominal evaluation.
  • An adequate amount of healthy, natural teeth.
  • A minimum of 14 dental points is required.
  • For Air Force recruits, routine ECGs must be within normal parameters.

Who are Not Eligible For NDA I 2023 Examination?
