In addition to Service and Joint Military Training, NDA also imparts contemporary education in Science, Military Technology, Arts and Computer Science to the cadets. At the end of their training, cadets receive a degree from the prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). While young cadets undergo training to face the challenges of modern day warfare, they also undergo a rigorous physical and mental training regimen including a wide array of activities like Calisthenics, Drill, Swimming, Horse-Riding and numerous team and individual sporting activities. Concurrently, a cadet’s horizon is shaped and expanded through exposure to various cultural activities, hobby and adventure clubs.

As we move past the first two decades of the new millennium, we are sanguine that the finest among Indian youth will continue to pass out from the portals of this iconic institution for the service of the nation, and for living up to the Academy’s motto ‘Seva Parmo Dharma’ or ‘Service Before Self’.

EVOLUTION OF THE ACADEMY INSIGNIA

All You Need To Know About National Defence Academy

The Academy Insignia

The Academy insignia of 1948 depicts the character of its joint services. This insignia was designed to develop and foster camaraderie between the three services and underwent several changes between 1949 and 1956. The present insignia depicts the NDA Crest symbolizing the three services; the Cross Swords, the Anchor, and the Himalayan Eagle surmounted by the Ashoka emblem on a maroon background. The symbols represent the Indian Army’s martial valor, the stability and poise of the Indian Navy, and the soaring aspirations and reach of the Indian Air Force. The Ashoka emblem is symbolic of the new Republic and depicts the pride in serving the motherland. The scroll at the base epitomizes the ideal of ‘Seva Parmo Dharma’ or ‘Service Before Self’ which is derived from the concept of ‘Nishkaam Karma’ of the Bhagavad Gita.

Philosophy of Service & Academics Training

At the Academy, cadets belonging to the three services live and train together. This ensures that the Officers of the three services develop camaraderie and broad understanding the ethos, organisation, capabilities and limitations of their own as well as their sister services. Training is focused towards imbibing jointmanship amongst cadets of all services, to enable them to operate as an integrated fighting force.

Cadets undergo training in Science, Computer Science and Social Science subjects. Overall, academic training at the Academy aims to provide cadets with contemporary education, along with an Armed Forces specific orientation, which shall serve as a much-needed primer for Professional Military Education to follow.
